Designing a Computer Network for the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University

It is required to design a computer network that meets the requirements specified below. The outcome of the design will consist of:

Part I:

  1. Network block diagram that graphically specifies the location and type of network component (switch, router, modem, transmission medium, DNS, … ,etc)
  2. Bill of quantities showing – for each network component – its main features (e.g. # of ports in case of routers and switches, link type and speed in case of transmission media) as well as a typical commercial product that satisfies these features (e.g. Cisco Catalyst 2960, HP 8212 zl, … , etc)
  3. Listing all subnetworks needed for the proposed design. For each subnetwrok specify: the type of addressing scheme (class-based, subnetting, or CIDR), as well as the range of IP addresses assigned.
  4. Calculation of the “Utilization” for the IP Address Scheme.
  5. Calculation of the cost for the proposed design. (Make use of real life prices for various network components). In your cost calculations, distinguish between capital (or initial) cost and operation (or running cost).

Part II:
Note that this part is subject to change.

  1. Simulation of the proposed design using the OPNET simulation tool.
  2. Performance results for the simulated network, including:
  • Average end-to-end delay for an FTP transaction (LAN access, WAN access, overall).
  • Average user throughput (LAN access, WAN access, overall).

Requirements for Part I:

a)    Design a computer network for the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University. The network includes the Main Campus (at Giza) as well as the branch (at Sheikh Zeid).

b)    Centralized servers consist of: Mail Server, Web Portal and E-Learning Server (all located at the Main Campus).

c)     # of PCs is 100 for each Department.

d)    Each PC has a Network Interface Card (NIC) of speed 100 Mbps.

e)    All PCs should have access to the Centralized Servers as well as to the Internet.

f)     A local DNS should be used to allow name resolution at the Local Level.

Requirements for Part II:

More details on this part will be shared later including traffic profile and exact metrics.

Deliverables and their Schedule

a)    Initial Design (Items 1, 2, 3 - Part I) : Wednesday, 16 November 2011

b)    Refined Design with Cost (Items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - Part I): Wednesday, 30 November 2011

c)     Simulation Setup and Performance Evaluation (Items 1, 2 - Part II): Wednesday, 18 December 2011

Action Plan and Marking

  1. Groups of 4 to 6 students are to be formed. The names for the members of the group are to be sent to Eng. Muhammad REFAAT (mo7amed.ref3t@gmail.com)
  2. Members of each group are encouraged to gather needed information by consulting books, papers, resources on the web, as well as by asking Demonstrators and Professors). All sources of information should be referenced clearly in each deliverable.
  3. Each group will be given a mark for EACH of the THREE deliverables.
  4. Each member of the group will be given a mark based on his/her understanding and contribution to the project. Such a mark will be determined by the Course Instructor through an oral session to be set during the last week of December.
