ELC N316: Communications II
(Communications II)

Course Objectives

  1. To introduce the detrimental effect of noise and ISI in digital communications systems.
  2. To introduce the concept of matched filtering and illustrate its importance in the digital communications receivers design.
  3. To illustrate the method for error rate calculation due to presence of noise.
  4. To explain the Nyquist criterion for pulse shaping for zero ISI.
  5. To explain the signal-space concept and introduce the Gram-Schmidt Orthogonalization procedure.
  6. To understand the concept of the likelihood function, the MAP and the ML decision rules.
  7. To introduce the union bound as a tool for error rate calculation.
  8. To introduce the different passband digital communications schemes: ASK, PSK and FSK and their performance.
